Dr. Peter Loomer

Dr. Peter Loomer is a leading expert in periodontology and implant dentistry, as well as the director of Global Health for oral health sciences at the NYU Global Institute of Public health and chairman of the Ashman Department of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at the NYU College of Dentistry.

Having worked with oral and dental health for more than two decades, Dr. Loomer has a broad range of expertise, including the oral microbiome, patient care initiatives, and improving dental health curriculums in multiple countries. He holds a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Toronto, Canada.

Some selected publications include developing a new curriculum in dentistry for Tanzania, reassessing global oral health competencies and guidelines, and the relationship between the oral microbiota and periodontal diseases. Dr. Loomer’s current projects include a collaboration with the NYUAD Public Health Research Center (PHRC) and University of Sharjah, investigating the impact of smoking on periodontal health. His presentation was about periodontal diseases, focusing on their epidemiology, diagnosis, and management.

Andrea Leinberger-Jabari

Andrea Leinberger-Jabari currently serves as Assistant Director for Tobacco Research at NYUAD, where she studies the usage and behaviour surrounding tobacco products in the UAE. She received a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, focusing on epidemiology and community health education. Prior to NYUAD, Andrea worked at The Rockefeller University Center for Clinical and Translational Science and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at the University of Minnesota. She has additionally been engaged with multiple community-based initiatives and health promotion projects, including healthcare access, childhood obesity and tobacco risk reduction.

Andrea Jabari

Dr. Manal Awad

Dr. Manal Awad is a professor at the Preventive and Restorative Dentistry department in the University of Sharjah, Dr. Awad is also the president-elect of the International Association for Dental Research, UAE Section.

She specializes in community and preventive dentistry and has a great understanding of lifestyle-related factors that affect adults’ and children’s dental and oral health in the UAE collected from her various research projects and assistantships in those areas. Her talk at PHTT 2017 was about the prevalence, risk factors and prevention of caries among children in the UAE.

Some selected publications in peer-reviewed journals are about caries among preschool children in Ajman, caries prevalence and patterns, predictors of dental rehabilitation among children, factors associated to dental anxiety, and odontogenic cysts and tumors in the UAE population.Her current research interests lie in quality of life, dental implants, the association between oral health and general health, and patient-based outcomes.

Dr. Shiamma AlMashhadani

Dr. Shiamaa Al Mashhadani is a member of the Dental Services Department at the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). She has spearheaded the ‘Dubai Smiles Healthy’ initiative, and has also been involved in implementing the first oral health survey for the emirate of Dubai in 2013.

Dr. Al Mashhadani’s ‘Dubai Smiles Healthy’ (DSH) program was launched in September 2015 with the goal of improving oral and dental health in Dubai. The initiative emphasizes the integration of dental care education into the syllabi of schools in Dubai, and mainly targets children aged six months to seventeen years old. DSH has three main components: School Practice, Child Health, and School Nurse Training. She is a strong proponent of how effective change can only happen through adjusting daily habits, and of how dental and oral diseases may cause complications with cardiovascular and pulmonary health.

Thaddeus Stegall

Thaddeus Stegall is a Residential College Director at NYU Abu Dhabi overseeing affairs in the first-year students community. Mr. Stegall is passionate about youth, activism and public speaking. He delivered a TEDx talk on student activism and institutional change at Michigan State University, has been actively involved with training students in presentation skills here at NYUAD, and coaching the speakers at the TEDx NYUAD event this past April.
